Solid Model Table Create the table project created earlier as a wire frame and surface model using solid modeling. This method demonstrates how much faster and simpler solid modeling is compared to wire frame or surface model construction. The model can be finished evoking the box command only three times to complete the project. 1. Open up the Wireframe Table drawing and save it as the drawing named Solid Model Table.
2. Select the 3D Wireframe view and erase the entire table wire frame model. Make LEG the current layer.
3. Invoke the BOX command and in the lower right of the current UCS x-y work plane start the corner of the box and enter the size for the leg @3.5,3.5 and then enter 16 for height to draw the first leg.
4. Select ARRAY and use 2 Rows and 2 Columns. From the dimensions given for the wire frame exercise earlier, enter the row distance at 1’4” and the column space at 2’4” to place the four legs.
Figure 1 Four solid legs completed using the BOX and ARRAY command.
5. Make CROSS the current layer and add the 2 x 8 cross elements with the proper dimensions on top of the legs.
Invoke the BOX command and then Shift and Right-Click and select FROM and then pick the left corner of the top of the leg and enter the proper distance (@-1.75,-1.75 to start box and then enter the size of the cross @7, 23 and the thickness 1.5” to place the cross spanning the first two legs. Notice that you are still in the current UCS x-y work plane, but on an elevation of 16 in the z-direction.
6. Use the COPY command to copy the cross over on top of the two other legs.
Figure 2 The two cross members are added to the legs using the BOX and the ARRAY command.
7. Make TOP the current layer and place the three 48” boards across the top of the table.
8. Invoke the BOX command and then Shift and Right-Click and select FROM and then pick the upper left corner on top of the left cross and enter the proper distance (@-6,0) to start the first 2 x 8 table top board. Enter the size of the cross @48,7 and then enter the thickness 1.5” to place the board.
9. Use the COPY command to copy the board over two times to form the table top with the boards 1” apart.
Figure 3 Completed solid model table and viewed with layers at different colors in Conceptual Visual Style. NOTE: Compare the time to construct the solid model table with the time to construct the same model as a wire frame and then adding surfaces. Construction of the solid model uses only three BOX commands, one ARRAY command and two COPY command to finish the project.
Sungear
The Sungear Wheel model is created using either the extrusion and rotate construction method.
